Does the media have an over rated self opinion of themselves?

Maybe I'm missing something but with the recent move of Katie Couric to head anchor woman on the NBC network, is it possible the general public cares far less than the media itself? It seems the industry itself is more excited then anyone I know.

To me it's far from anything really newsworthy. It not like women don't have leading roles in journalism and aren't damn good at it. Hell I even see them doing the news in the Middle East!

Of course, it's their media. A reporter kidnapped or killed is much bigger news than someone else kidnapped or killed. And, "the publics right to know" trumps not only common decency but the law as well. I'm afraid I can't see who the teleprompter reader is matters much.
