Oct. 16, 2006 - Do you remember the name Rachel Corrie? Maybe not. She was a 23-year-old American peace activist killed by an Israeli Army bulldozer as she tried to block the destruction of a Palestinian’s house in Gaza in March 2003. She became more than a footnote in the Middle East conflict when her own words—from her journals and e-mails—were shaped into an award-winning one-actor play in London called “My Name is Rachel Corrie.” But when the show’s U.S. opening last spring was cancelled at the New York Theater Workshop (best known for spawning the musical “Rent”), a controversy erupted. The theater’s artistic director had made his decision after talking to leaders in the Jewish community; he later told The New York Times, “It seemed as though if we proceeded, we would be taking a stand we didn’t want to take.” The London producers called the cancellation “censorship.”
With that advance drum roll, “My Name Is Rachel Corrie” finally opened last weekend at the intimate Minetta Lane Theater in Greenwich Village, brought here by new producers. And here’s the good news: the play is hardly a political diatribe. Artfully adapted (by actor/director Alan Rickman and journalist Katharine Viner), it’s about a passionately idealistic young woman, whose childhood causes included ending world hunger and saving the spotted owl. If that sounds painfully earnest,

I would say dreadfully earnest. The play should be called The Apotheosis of Rachel Corrie.

She died in the defense of the Palestinan right to terrorize Israelis. So yeah, you're right. She was helping people called terrorists. She was a fool and the world is a better place without her.

The world benefits greatly from your compassion. I guess all palestinians are terrorists to some people...
Even if you dont agree with what she was doing, can you not even respect a young woman risking death to do what she felt was right?
If you cant then i truely pity you.

Ah...
Personally i think it's a bit different. KKK lynching blacks from tree's for fun and a young girl standing up to an armored bulldozer to stop it from tearing down a families home...
but whatever.
Laugh it up.

If you cant then i truely pity you.If I can interject. I don't respect her. I pity her because she was used by a horrendous and racist group that got exactly what it wanted in her death. Would I respect someone who died doing the bidding of the KKK or the Nazi party? Of course not, but I could pity them. Rachel Corrie has my pity, but that is all.

Are you kidding? Compassion? I don't waste compassion on the enablers of terrorists. That house was being torn down because it belonged to a suicide bomber. She was on the side of terrorism. I feel about as much compassion for her as I do for an SS camp guard at Bergen-Belsen and regard her as one of the same species. If all the terrorist supporting scum in the world like Rachal Corrie shared one neck I would put Caligula's hands around it. Keep your precious pity, you need it. I don't.

She died being stupid, not helping people. Her death was meaningless. If she truly wanted to change things, then maybe she should have been demanding that Arafat give some of his billions to the Palestinians to help them instead of hiding it in Swiss bank accounts. Maybe she should have been encouraging the PLO to actually work towards peace instead of demanding Israels destruction. Dieing for a cause does not automatically make you a hero, changing things for the better does. Rachel Corrie died trying to stop a bulldozer, she accomplished nothing by her death other than to create sympathy from folks like yourself. Her death did nothing to bring Israel and the Palestinians closer to peace. Sorry if that sounds cold, but it's true. I feel for her family, but her death was a waste.

She was defending the right of a Palestinian doctor to not have his home domolished.
But this thread is way to classy for me.

That's flat out false. The home being demolished didn't belong to a suicide bomber. It belonged to a Palestinian doctor.
