Manchester Imam Says "Kill Gays," Media Yawns
Bruce Bawer (http://www.brucebawer.com/blog.htm) looks at British media’s coverage of the Manchester imam who’s telling his followers it’s OK to kill gays. (http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=23121_Leading_UK_Imam-_Its_OK_To_Kill_Gays&only) (Or should I say, non-coverage?)
He and Phelps ought to get together

I believe hate speech is a criminal offense in the UK. Not sure though..
Anyway that's absolutely heinous though. We should certainly send him on a ..."pleasure cruise" with Phelps though. I know just the right kind of cruise..

exactly... it woul dby like a bad holywood movie. They'll make friends who will teach them about themselves. Friends who will teach them to believe in themselves!
Like those college movies about the square who fall sin with the hard-partying fraternity of fat guys in hawaiian shirts who teach them to enjoy life..
that sort of thing.
EDIT: I just realized how often i said "though" in my first post. I apologize!

As with most subjective blogs, Bawer neglects to see the overall picture in Manchester...
Manchester and it's surrounding towns have one of the largest Asian and Muslim communities in Europe, and many previous tensions were eased by the work of the last Lord Mayor of the city, Mohammed Afzal Khan.

Hopefully, more than many other cities, the people of Manchester will write of the Imam's inflammatory words as the ramblings of a religious zealot.

The sentiment expressed by this Imam is unacceptable in a western society.
That being said, I`m not very surprised larger news-papers haven`t covered this. The whole story is based on hearsay. Larger newspapers or media companies are probably reluctant to publish a rather serious accusation towards a private citizen without any decent evidence to back it up with. The Imam could easily just deny that the conversation ever took place or claim that this Casson fellow just misunderstood. Had it been a sermon, it would have been another issue though.

After the cartoon and pope situations I'm not at all surprised this wasn't covered in more detail. As the thread on the bbc and islam points out criticising aspects of islam comes with a price tag. Look for more of this in the future.

Do you think the larger news-medias would have acted differently if a random individual claimed that a Rabbi or a Priest had said something simmiliar in a private conversation?

I'm not sure about private conversations, but yes. I see this happening more all the time. You see it's possible to bash christianity and the jewish religion because nothing will happen. Bash islam and people die. Human nature. Anyone who's studied behavioralism will tell you this.

Seeing as how Phelps is dead, it would be nice if the two got together.
But seriously folks, we don't need to waste our time considering people like this Manchester Imam. We have all been taught right here at WhistleStopper that the radical elements in the muslim world are basicaly of no consequence. Mainstream Islam is all about peace and it has these radicals firmly under control.
Don't worry, be happy.:Peace: :music: :flowers:

 So that's it, Eddie?! You just let the Imam off the hook that easily?!!? No call for hard journalistic investigation?
Wow...that's pretty weak!?! How come the Imam gets such easy treatment compared to other religious and political leaders?

To reiterate, rjamortega, Fred Phelps isn't dead. That's just wishful thinking on your part, perhaps? ;)

Yeah, my mistake. A couple of weeks ago when his daughters were on some talk show I thought the host said he was deceased. The pic they showed of him looked like a cadaver.

22 separate independent mosques in Greater Manchester alone, and one of their imams is a whackjob? Yawn is about right.

The 3% of the UK population who profess a muslim faith are not evenly distributed around the country. Britons can live where they choose.

The same thing has also happened in america. It's easier to resist assimilation if you are living in concentrated groups. ;)
