What level of coverage, if any, is the coup in Fiji getting? It is pretty big news here but I haven't posted about it and was wondering if anyone else had heard about it.

It's getting coverage over here...

...and has made the major national news programmes, but nothing more that 5mins or so.

It should have more coverage with being a Commonwealth nation.
I've been following it best as I can as I was there in 1992 and would love to go back. Back then, it was Rabuka who had been installed as the result of a coup and Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth. They've not been back long and this goes and happens! :(

I honestly think Fijians are the lovliest people I have ever met, but it's all too obvious the damage collonialism inflicted in the country. The racial mix is very complicated with about 45% being descendents of Asian Indian workers that the Brits took over there to work the sugar plantations. With about 50% being native Fijian Indians, there's always going to be an element of friction...but you really do have to scratch the surface to see it.

Am I the only one who thinks the idea of Fiji having coups is utterly hilarious?

There's a certain amount of ridiculousness about it, especially when one hears the lame-o excuses the new boss put up for why he had to do it. Fiji was, apparently, on the Road to Doom.
That said there's a lot of very big guys strolling around with very large automatic rifles, who aren't all that funny.
It is a sad day for Fiji though and will cripple their tourism industry.

It's in the news a little bit here I think, but certainly not on the front pages.

It's almost like they're panicking because they're not bad guys and they think they need to be to survive in this World. :(

When I was over there, one 'news' story was top of the news for two whole weeks...
A local guy had been drinking heavily in a bar in Lautoka and was mugged when he left the bar. All the two thieves stole were his Chinos!

Can you imagine that even making the news over here?
