MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Martin Nodell, the creator of Green Lantern, the comic book superhero who uses his magical ring to help him fight crime, has died. He was 91.

Nodell died at a nursing home in Muskego, Wisconsin, on Saturday of natural causes, his son Spencer Nodell told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He previously lived in West Palm Beach.

Nodell was looking for a new idea for a comic book in 1940 when he was waiting for a New York subway and saw a train operator waving a lantern displaying a green light, said Maggie Thompson, senior editor of Comics Buyer's Guide.

At least he left us with an amazing hero to read about. But I am sad nonetheless. :(

ahhhhh...it is always so sad to see all the old personalities and entertainers pass. I remember reading his GL comics as a kid.:( ...:) RIP Mr. Nodell.

Man, that's sad. I met him many times at the San Diego Comic Con, the largest of its kind in North America. He would be off in the artist's gallery area with a tiny booth, there with his wife, whose name I forget. No one would be there, doubtful all the youngsters even knew who he was. I have some sketches by him along with his autograph. That's not the point, he was a very kind, open, gentle man, glad for the opportunity to talk about his past work in comics.

Geez, this really bums me out... :(

Sorry to hear that.. although I can't believe its true....

I'm quite sure he's been rolling in his grave since 01-03-2004.... he must have been dead before then...

Man...That really makes me sad. I read GL comics a lot as a kid, and I know many of my friends did as well. Mr. Nodell will be missed.

You're probably right, he hasn't produced anything original for years! ;)

oh you folks have no respect for the dead
in the world of comics this man was one of its greatest creators
you wait and see, when they finally make that Green Lantern movie you all will be a lot more respectful

Are there already plans to make a GL movie, or are you just assuming they probably will because they're making a movie for everyone?

Given GL's abilities, such a movie with today's computer graphics, could be absolutely phenomenal if done right.

Guy Gardner spent much of the ‘80s and ’90s serving in both the Justice League and Green Lantern Corps (and perhaps Whistlestopper staff???) as a kind of right-wing reactionary loose-cannon GL, with an “I-hate-everyone” attitude and one of the most atrocious “bowl-haircuts” in comic-book history. Guy’s a hoot:lol:

What exactly are you trying to say, Towski?? :)

Don't think it didn't cross my mind...

While I'm not a fan of Green Lantern, it is a tragedy each time we lose one of the few remaining writers and artists from the Golden Age era, especially those who created new characters.
