Kid's 2-inch gun seized
By BOB GRAHAM
AIRPORT security staff confiscated a TWO-INCH plastic gun from a toy soldier, it was revealed yesterday.
British tourist Judy Powell, 55, bought a GI Joe doll in America as a gift for her seven-year-old grandson George.
Security officials at Los Angeles airport found the toy — similar to Action Man — when they searched Judy’s bags before she boarded a flight to London.
Then they took the figure out of its box and confiscated its tiny replica Armalite rifle.
Judy revealed: “They examined the toy as if it was going to shoot them.
“Then they asked me if there were toy grenades as well. I thought they were joking, but they weren’t smiling — they were deadly serious.”

George’s mum Becky, 29, said the lad was “really upset” when he realised his GI Joe had been disarmed.

Jesus!
Why didn't they throw the doll (sorry, action figure) to the floor and put some tiny little handcuffs on him as well? Did they check his tiny canteen for liquids?

You'd think he'd have never let them take his weapon, but then he doesn't have the testicular fortitude, lacking the necessary testicles......

Good thing GI Joe is a US citizen, so he can't be sent to Gitmo!!!
They'd have to redesign the bars, he could slip right through them...

Three years ago a coworker and I were flying out of Detroit. The coworker had a miniature P38 boyscout can opener attached to a keychain. The airport security guy wanted to confiscate it because he said it was a dangerous weapon. My friend asked to see his supervisor, and he was allowed to pass through, but vowing to remove it from his keychain when he got home. I have come to the conclusion that requirements for airline security must require an IQ of between 40 and 90. Any higher IQ, and the person will not be hired. Believe me, I have run into some real weiners.;) I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling every time I have to pass through airline security.

Are you sure this story isn't a spoof of some kind, or perhaps an urban legend?
These stories seem to be about the same thing:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2173150.stm
http://www.thewavemag.com/pagegen.php?pagename=article&articleid=22373
But, then this one has quite different facts:
http://www.conservativetruth.org/article.php?id=444
Either there are two cases of disarming G.I. Joe dolls, or someone is spreading silly rumors.
The Urban Legends Reference Pages (http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=g.i.+joe+doll&getit=Go&sp-a=00062d45-sp00000000&sp-advanced=1&sp-p=all&sp-w-control=1&sp-w=alike&sp-date-range=-1&sp-x=any&sp-c=100&sp-m=1&sp-s=0) led to a story about a woman who had to drink breast milk to prove it wasn't something nefarious, and mentions the same BBC story on the link above.
Stupidity, urban legend, or a mixture of both? You decide.

Well seeing as the government does such a fine job at security like this certainly we should put them in charge of a nationalized health care system.

I have had to throw away two perfectly good P38s because of the TSA. I carry one on my key chain at all times. One of the handiest tools out there.

Hmmm...because airport security clearly worked really well when it was in the hands of private contractors.

I am absolutely sure private industry can do it better.
Of course, rules have changed since 9-11-2001, box cutters used to be allowed on aircraft (I am assuming you are referencing something like that).

I have seen private contractors and government security types. Believe me. There is no difference. The old argument was people were having trouble with the private contractors, and everything would be alright as soon as they switched to government security. Have you ever seen the government straighten out anything?

Come on now .... did you really expect to get a P-38 (http://www.solent-aviation-society.co.uk/gallery/Udvar_Hazy03/P%2038.jpg) past security and onto the plane? :)
