No virgins for Abdullah: Former Guantanamo detainee blows himself up.

A former Guantanamo Bay prisoner who took up arms alongside the Taliban after he was released from detention has blown himself up to avoid capture, Pakistani security forces said today.

Abdullah Mehsud killed himself with a hand grenade after he was cornered by troops at a house in the south-western Pakistani town of Zhob. He was wanted for the kidnapping of two Chinese engineers in 2004.

“My information is that (he) killed himself,” said Atta Mohammed, the head of the police in Zhob. “Thanks be to God that only he was blown up and our men were safe.”

Mehsud, 32, was released from the US detention centre in Cuba after two years in 2004 but immediately went back to violence when the Pakistani government began an offensive against the Taliban in the troubled region along the border with Afghanistan.

Since when did anyone say that terrorists (convicted ones, btw.) should be rehabilitated?

I also wonder if he indeed was a terrorist prior to his capture (and if, why was he released?) and how much his treatment at Gitmo was responsible for his last violent acts.

Gitmo as rehab. That's an interesting concept.
Incidentally how did he get out of there? He claims that he lied to his interrogators. maybe the magic truth elixir wasn't in his waterboarding water?
And when he did get out, somehow evading the truth rays, he went back to the Taliban almost like he was reacting against what had happened to him. Apparently about 10 former detainees have done the same, ungrateful bastards.

But, honestly, I don't see what the point of this Current Event is. Is it surprising to anyone that Gitmo would screw up? It's the Bush administration after all.

Well, its obvious to any impartial observer that if anybody released from Gitmo turns to terror, they would all do the same thing. No need to examine any of them individually. This one guy has obviously proven they are all terrorists and should be detained indefinitely.

Can't really comment on this case in specific because we don't know the details of his original detention. I can say 100% for sure that if you took me and locked me up and tortured me for years, the minute I got away I would start a body count.
