Los Angeles - Gwen Stefani could be forced to cancel her Malaysian show after a Muslim group branded her "indecent" and "obscene".

The singer, who is currently on the road with her Sweet Escape tour, is due to perform in Kuala Lumpur next month but the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students want the concert scrapped because Gwen's image offends Islamic beliefs.

Mohamad Hilmi Ramli said: "Her video clips promoting the event are too obscene. We want the organisers to cancel the concert, failing which we will ask the authorities to intervene."

Ramli also slammed Malaysian cellphone company Maxis Communications for promoting Gwen's concert and exposing young Malaysians to "moral decay".

What a coincidence, I find their religion obscene.

Sounds like the 'moral majority,' as much as anything to me. Did traditional conservatives not act in a similar manner regarding Madonna?

So certain religous leaders want to stop a pop-singer they believe to be lewd, obcene or indecent? A rather weak attempt at MBT, I`m sure you can do better than that. I mean, just compare this to the "muslims eat babies" thread .

Did Madonna ever have to cancel a concert?

This is a good thing. We westerners need to better understand the intolerance of Islam.

This is a really new phenomenon, isn't it?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#Controversial_king

Presley was considered by some to be a threat to the moral wellbeing of young women, because "Elvis Presley didn’t just represent a new type of music; he represented sexual liberation." In 1956, a critic for the New York Daily News wrote that popular music "has reached its lowest depths in the 'grunt and groin' antics of one Elvis Presley" and the Jesuits denounced him in its weekly magazine, America. Even Frank Sinatra opined: "[Presley's] kind of music is deplorable, a rancid smelling aphrodisiac. It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people."[78]

In August, 1956, a Florida judge called Presley a "savage" and threatened to arrest him if he shook his body while performing in Jacksonville. The judge declared that Presley's music was undermining the youth of America. Throughout the performance (which was filmed by police), he kept still as ordered, except for wiggling a finger in mockery at the ruling. (Presley himself recalls this incident during the '68 Comeback Special).

The singer himself seemed bemused by all the criticism. On another of the many occasions he was challenged to justify the furore surrounding him, he said: "I don't see how they think [my act] can contribute to juvenile delinquency. if there's anything I've tried to do, I've tried to live a straight, clean life and not set any kind of a bad example. You cannot please everyone."

At least they don't fear than she's making kids gay, like Spongebob.

Hopefully in 51 years, things will be different in Malaysia.

Hopefully. Hopefully they won't protest Marilyn Manson concerts, or Madonna's "like a prayer" video, or the Mapplethorpe art, either.

They werent banned (It was 20 years ago)were they. Its called freedom when people can protest what they think is wrong so I guess you are against freedom of speech/assembly when it comes to things you dont agree with especially from Christians. Now if the Government banned it then we would have a problem but I guess you are ok with banning as long as it stops an offence against Islamic sensibilities and not Christian. Just another example of the hypocracy and spin eminating from liberals/leftists when it comes to Islam and Christianity

Is that not exactly what this Muslim group is doing? Protesting against something they think is wrong? They want it banned, just as various groups have wanted various things banned in the past in different countries. If the concerts are actually banned, then that would be indicative of the general will.

The Gov is considering banning it, thats the problem. They protested here such as some Manson concerts but no one bans or cancels their shows. I knew when I posted this someone would try to equivicate the US and Christians in some way, its so predictable

There is nothing in the article that suggests that the Malaysian government is considering banning it.

Where does it say that? Unless you consider a student union to be part of the government. The NUS would be thrilled, I'm sure.

Which goverment is considering banning it? There is no mention of such in the link you provided. The word you seek is "equate". I knew you would raise some petty objection to the rightful equation of religious bigotries expressed through censorship, it's so predictable.

Just another MBT....

I was able to decipher enough of your runon sentences to tell you that, after also wading through the usual bile you spew at anyone who disagrees with you, you are incorrect. I made no argument that it was ok, I made no argument that I supported either their government or religion, or that I was demonizing christianity. I simply think that, as a Christian, it is OK to be critical of my own religion just as I am critical of theirs. Obviously, you have a problem with that. Perhaps your time would be better served protesting outside abortion clinics, or writing poorly constructed 50,000 word diatribes on a manual typewriter, rather than constructing weak arguments with no factual basis on an internet forum you already profess to dislike.

Once again, you play the lowest common denominator card. Good day.
