Somehow, these Beijing anti-terrorist police training to protect the public during the Olympic Games don't inspire me with faith...
Paramilitary policemen on assault vehicles take part in an anti-terrorism drill in Jinan, Shandong province July 2, 2008. China will have nearly 100,000 commandos, police and members of the military on standby up to and during the Beijing Olympics to handle potential terrorist attacks, state media reported.

Ummm that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in my life. A sniper could just sit there and pic them off at his or her leisure.
Oh my various gods
That is the most amazing thing I have ever seen!
Do they have vespa commandos too?

Again more of a show of force and to stop protestors, most likely pro tibetan protestors than to stop terrorism

Ok, I'll play devils advocate here. I think those machines are kinda cool. Nice way to get around congested areas and not get tired. :D

This may be a very British reference but they remind me of a children's tv programme called 'Chorlton and the Wheelies'. :D

Hey, I'm just glad the US has finally found a high-dollar item to sell back to the Chinese--get some of that foreign exchange back. ;)

Yea...but for your SWAT team????
I was in topeka the other day with my kids (went to the zoo) and we saw a couple of cops rolling around on segeways. I am sorry, but they just look stupid. It is like giving them little kid go karts as patrol cars. We were sitting on a bench when one rolled by (the first one I saw) and I laughed and pointed it out to my wife. The cop came rolling back around and stopped and asked "Do I look as stupid as a feel on this thing?"
I told him "I'm afraid so."
He said that he told them he did not want one...he would rather walk or ride a bike, but apparently someone, somewhere thought they really needed them. He also told me that he has seen a lot of people turn away and snicker, but I was the first who openly laughed and pointed (I am always breaking new ground).
OH....and they have to wear HELMETS when they ride around on thier little balancing scooter things.

That's pretty funny! If I was a cop, I'd beg for highway patrol rather than having to ride one of those things.

I'm gobsmacked that this is an American thing :eek:They're very expensive, a little dangerous, and they haven't sold well here. The inventors of the thing are hoping that gas prices will change the paradigm and that the Segway's (that's what they're called) time has come. I saw some campus cops testing them out in the parking lot the other day on my way to the office.

If they start to sell, we will see more cheap copies all over the place. The price tag on those things is insane. There are already a couple of cheap copies out there for sale for about 1/3 the price.
I still have trouble with the idea of them for cops. They just look so incredibly stupid on them. They remind me of the cops in the movie "Demolition Man". In order for the entire concept of a civil police force to work, people have to respect the officers. That is why they wear the uniforms and have the shiny belts and badges and guns. Their uniforms are supposed to not only make them visible, but to cause some amount of awe. How can you respect somebody who looks like that big an idiot?

You could never, ever, ever get me to ride on one of those things on duty. I would have to be out of my mind. I would rather walk.

Actually, it's a oretty good idea. They can move through tight areas (alleys, pedestrian walkways) and congested traffic much better than a car, without leaving the rider tired out like running or even a bicycle.

It also makes you a nice little consistently paced target. And goodness forbid an Officer be tired from running. When I was patrolling, every other day I sprinted a half mile on a track. Complimenting my 30 minutes on a jump rope and days where I did stairs and a variety of other cardio-vascular exercises. This just makes it easier for officers to get fat.

I was speaking specifically about my brothers and sisters in LE in the states. But there are doughnuts in china now. Let the fat begin.

I bet bike cops felt the same way about the spandex shorts at first...
Does gaydar come standard with those Segways? Seems like a natural fit...

Yeah but bike cops can smack the hell out of you with their bike. I remember a training day when I was playing the criminal and I made fun of their shorts. One of my buddies as he chased me whipped his back wheel around and clocked me pretty good.
The Segways I just don't see any good from them. With a bike you are limited in speed only by the power of your leg. What is the top Speed of a Segway? 12 miles an hour, you can't go down steps, or rough terrain or any of that.

Segways can operate on the sort of rough terrain likely to be found in a city. They can also go down stairs in follow mode, though not back up. I think the main attraction is that they do not tire the rider as much as a bike.

And you look like an idiot. Lets not forget that. IMO it would make it harder to perform your duties if everybody is laughing at you when you pull up.
If bikes are really just too hard on cops, get electric assist units for the bikes. Don't make them look like idiots by putting them on one of these things. As an added advantage, an electric assist on a bike can really get you MOVING if need be. There is a local kid who bought one and then got busted for speeding....50 in a 30. That is pretty fast for a bicycle.

If they are tired from a bike ride, then they need to rethink their choice of career. Because if they can't do that, then how do they expect to survive in an extended fight with a suspect/s. Now I have just got done watching videos of the segway go down stairs and over various obstacles and it just isn't quick. It is efficient in the least. I am not saying that there is zero applications for it in LE (parking ticket writers come to mind) or maybe parade detail or something little like that. But I just don't see it in a active patrol aspect.

Exertion tires everyone--even if they aren't exhausted, I can't help but think a well rested officer is more effective than one who just rode a couple of miles on his bike.

It looks about as quick as a bike. At least, if you get one with large wheels that have as much ground clearance as the height of each step.

Umm, they looked like they were just giving a parade, showing off all the neat gadgets they've got for fighting terrorists. I think there's a video of this on youtube.

Exertion tires everyone--even if they aren't exhausted, I can't help but think a well rested officer is more effective than one who just rode a couple of miles on his bike.
It depends on the level of exertion. When I was on patrol, every other day I would sprint a solid half mile on top of 30 minutes of tough cardio, hour of weight lifting and a quick Martial Art workout to loosen up. And I was just fine on patrol and could chase down anybody. But lets take a look at the immediate effects of someone that has to deal with a suspect that just peddled a couple of miles (now mind you they are not racing these miles, they are casually peddling) Their heart rate is already beating pretty decent, and their bodies are already for the adrenaline that is coming. This I think is better then going from 0 - 60 in .5 seconds.
It looks about as quick as a bike. At least, if you get one with large wheels that have as much ground clearance as the height of each step.
On my mountain bike I can take a flight of stairs in less than a second. It took longer on the Segway. I can hop onto a bench or over it in about the same time. You can use the front tire for defense or the back tire for offense as my buddy did to me. Etc etc etc. The only benefit that the segway has over it. Is that you can get off the segway quicker then a bike.
Umm, they looked like they were just giving a parade, showing off all the neat gadgets they've got for fighting terrorists. I think there's a video of this on youtube.
That is the other thing, fighting terrorists. I have been in more then my fair share of gunfights and out of all of the things I wanted during that time. The last thing I wanted was a freaking Segway. Unless that is if they put some type of armored shield. Something like this on the front would be nice.
http://www.bakerbatshield.com/home.asp
Now that would be cool and nice portable cover for the operator engaging an Active Shooter. It would also have to be removable for when the Operator decides to abandon the segway and go on foot. Now if they did that, I would fully endorse it as a viable alternative and a tactical advantage in its use.
