Canadian border guards are under orders to prevent members of a fundamentalist American church from crossing into Canada to protest at the funeral Saturday of a Winnipeg man brutally killed on a Greyhound bus last week.

Westboro Baptist Church, a controversial Kansas-based sect, intends to picket the funeral of 22-year-old Tim McLean to tell Canadians his slaying on July 30 was God's response to Canadian policies enabling abortion, homosexuality and adultery.

"God is punishing Canada for passing laws against WBC — by exposing Canadians as cannibals and highway decapitaters," the church says in a news release on its website, which refers to McLean as "The Headless Canadian."

Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day's office sent an alert to border patrol to "look out" for people with signs and pamphlets consistent with the messages that the church promotes and to keep them out of the country, Winnipeg MP Pat Martin told CBC News on Friday.

"Entering Canada by a U.S. citizen isn't an absolute right, and if you're coming here only to disrupt the social order and to promote what we consider to be bordering on hate crimes or hate language, they shouldn't come into Canada," Martin said.

Good! I hope the government manages to keep these crazy bastards out of the country! They shouldn't be doing what they do in the US, let alone sticking their noses into other countries' business.

Maybe we should let them in, and then arrest them all at the demonstration under the hate crimes legislation. Then they can languish in prison and wont bother the good folks of either country for some time.

This is of course the same 'church' (I use that term extremely lightly) whose website address is www.godhatesfags.com . Such a lovely and compassionate bunch of peacefull christians.......

They're a hell-bound bunch to be sure. I believe in freedom of speech even to the most ridiculous extent - but if we could get them out of the country, I'd love to have a law that doesn't let them back in.

You know what blows me away? I can see one totally stupid and crazy person that believes something whacky or even a couple. But a whole church?

Apparently it's not that hard. Through religion millions of people have been lead to believe some pretty crazy notions over the centuries. ;)

In this particular case, I think that these people have some inner desire to hate. Their "religion" as they see it, gives them the excuse they need.

But at least with cults (for example) people at least seem to emulate some kind of Christian behavior albeit it may be extreme. This church is so contrary to that it's unbelievable.

When is some grief stricken family member going to finally snap and attack one of these pigs? There is a limit of how much some people can take.

If my nephew would have come back from Iraq in a body bag (he came very close) and I knew these idiots would be showing up for the funeral I would be handing out baseball bats. I guarantee you they would have had second thoughts about getting anywhere near our funeral.

As far as the police providing them with security it's doubtful the good ol' boys here would lift a finger while we beat them to a pulp.

As I understand it something along those lines happened when the Phelps nuts were going to protest at the funeral services for a young Marine where I live. Apparently their merry little group phones the local police a week or so before to assure protection. They were told the manpower was not available to police their "special" event .... and they didn't show up although it was still listed on their website.

They were supposed to protest a speech at the college I worked at in the late 90s, but they ended up only being able to send one protester because they all had to rush to Wyoming to protest at Matthew Shepherd's funeral.

They're such a classy bunch.

Hah! Nice! :D That's the way to do it. Don't give these scumbags any privileges.

The members of the Westboro Baptist church are an embarrassment to all Christians out there who actually do the right thing.

Christians shouldn't be embarrassed by them - they don't fall into the Christian category by any stretch of the imagination. ;)

Actually, if you believe in Christ as Divine, you're Christian (to my understanding). Hate to break it to ya. That's one of the major problems with religions, they can be interpreted, and done so in a way that suits the interests of the person involved.

Yeah but it just doesn't stop there AgentM. According to the Bible the devil knows that Christ is divine, but that doesn't make him Christian. What makes someone a Christian is that they have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and believe in Him and the Word of God.

WBC doesn't believe in the Bible fully, because they have said clearly in interviews that they don't believe that someone can truly repent outside their little commune as evidenced from this little tidbit of crap from their site:

Doesn't God forgive everyone?

No. God will have mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth (Romans 9:18). God is sovereign, and does whatsoever he will in the army of heaven and amongst the inhabitants of the Earth, and none can stay his hand. You must come to term with two facts, which are extremely difficult for the flesh to grasp: First, God does not exist to serve you, you exist to serve him. Second, you are without the ability, of your own will, to do anything pleasing to God. You have no work to offer which is worthy in his sight. The best works of humans are as filthy rags in God's eyes. Your flesh is at war with his spirit. These are all phrases taken from passages in the scriptures. And you will not serve God, unless and until he draws you to him. And if he draws you, you will not be able to resist. You will recognize that every human, at the moment of birth, utterly deserves to go straight to hell. Even so, in his justness, God had mercy on some, and named some his children, whom he will lead to glory. Your best hope is that you are among those he has chosen. Your prayer every day should be that you might be. And if you are not, nothing you say or do will serve as a substitute. And if you are, you will praise and worship him, in humble gratitude, day and night. Ask yourself this question: Does God forgive the people in hell.

They are stating that God chooses who comes to salvation, and that is not Biblically accurate. "God wishes that no one should perish". This has nothing to do with differences of interpretation, it has to do with reading comprehension, of which, the WBC are fools.

But my gut feeling is, that they are immoral, hate filled, despicable jackasses who cannot see through their own deluded view of the world, will likely wind up in hell, the very place they accuse everyone but themselves of heading toward.

It's unfortunately my pleasure to shed some light on these phonies. But some would say "Well, you are a believer Hunter....Why are you judging?"

The Bible makes it clear that we are not to judge based on anything other than the Word because according to scripture, it's the Word that we will be judged by. Thus the Bible calls these religious people fools, and fools are what they are.

I'll get back to you about them being jackasses...Maybe it's in Isiah? LOL

Something ought to be done. There's got to be an answer for these loons.

WBC is proof that even in this enlightened age there is still good reason for vigilantyism and kangaroo courts.

Gawd, I hope there couldn't be more than a couple hundred!!?!! Unlike jr I think I fear these guys more than the left whackos. These guys god is frickin' scary. PETA only has cute whiddo fuzzy creatures.

According to Louis Theroux's (good documentary maker by the way, although his style is perhaps a bit repetitive) The Most Hated Family in America, the vast majority of people in the Westboro Baptist Church are related to or married to someone related to it's leader Fred Phelps who at age 78 has 13 children and presumably many grandchildren.
