Henry Cejudo had more to wrestle with than a world-class Japanese opponent on his way to an improbable gold medal on Tuesday.

He had to grapple with a childhood that saw his mother illegally emigrate from Mexico to escape a father who constantly ran afoul of the law. It was a childhood that saw him sleeping in the same bed as his siblings as they moved from place to place trying to find a new home.

“You know, it’s truly a dream come true,” Cejudo told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer on Wednesday. “I’m basically living the American dream. I’m an Olympic gold medalist now. And anything’s possible.”

His parents divorced when he was 4 and his father, Jorge, spent time in prison for drug-related offenses. In fact, Cejudo had only seen his father one more time before he died in Mexico City last year.

That put the onus on his mother, Nelly Rico, to find a better life.

She raised her seven children on her own, traveling from Mexico to the United States as an illegal immigrant and finding minimum-wage jobs from California to New Mexico to Arizona while Cejudo’s siblings often slept two to four to a bed.

“My mom is just a strong woman,” Cejudo told Lauer. “She came to the U.S. about 30 years ago and she‘s been in the U.S. ever since. She raised seven kids by herself. I just look up to her. She’s my hero. She’s just the toughest lady you’ll ever meet.”

Great. Taking gold medals away from more deserving, legitimate US citizens.

Obviously he hates America. I heard he wore his red, white, and blue jacket upside-down just to taunt the real American athletes.

Well he did display the American flag backwards, but in all fairness he thought that's way it should be as he saw our American president do that.

A seemingly nice kid wins a medal. This has what to do with illegal immigration in this country? Perhaps I should take a more progressive and enlightened view of illegal immigration to america. Say, perhaps one seemingly nice kid wins an olympic medal so we should all support the whosale illegal immigration into the us of tens of millions of functionally illiterate individuals who precipitate major socio-economic problems in the us such as strains on our social services and mexican gang problems no one seems to want. Well, I'll be damned. I'm now a american liberal. Ya-hoo.

I think the "belligerati" is trustworthy--the unholy trinity of left-liberals-turned-hawkish idiots:

1. Christopher Hitchens ("part of the charm of the regime-change argument is that it depends on premises and objectives that cannot, at least by the administration, be publically avowed");

2. Martin Amis ("The Muslim community will have to suffer until it gets its house in order. What sort of suffering? Not letting them travel. Deportation - further down the road. Curtailing of freedoms. Strip-searching people who look like they're from the Middle East or from Pakistan ... Discriminatory stuff, until it hurts the whole community and they start getting tough with their children...")

3. Salman Rushdie ("Western critics of America's Afghan campaign are enraged because they have been shown to be not only spineless but wrong at every step.")

These three Men of Letters, all close friends, not uncoincidentally, seem to have embraced the proper elitist, frightened, servile, heart-of-the-establishment perspective that braces all our spines.

(On the upside, it proves that glorious Britannia can still produce smug blowhards to rival any American. :) )

Was there ever any doubt of that? I mean, they do have the BNP. :D

Don't forget us Canadians too I mean look at many in the former Reform Party and their ilk from the Calgary School...and now ex-Reformers make up a good chunk of the Conservative Party...goody (we also have one as PM).

I wouldnt equate the Reform Party with the BNP,

sure some of the more rural riding from AB might have sympathy with the BNP, but Preston Manning was and is not a racist nut job

I certainly wasn't meaning to equate Reform with the BNP, they're not anywhere near that bad. I was just equating them with the smug blowhard comment, perhaps I should have been more clear.

Seriously, I didn't really pay attention to the BNP or British politics, but once I read up on them, and their gains in power in recent years I was shocked.

"...She’s just the toughest lady you’ll ever meet.” - Henry Cejuda

If Henry's mom is so tough she should have done a better job of fighting off that loser husband of hers.

Or maybe offspring are to her what lead weights are to an athlete.
