I guess that the ole public image is a little dented at the moment for Czar Putin so it needed a bit of polishing. (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/09/01/2351315.htm)
What better way to get some positive news for a change than to save members of the TV community? Possibly the last people Putin would normally consider saving unless they are loyal Putin fans.
Even better you don't actually kill the Tiger just tranquilize it. Kind of amazing that it acted so quickly to stop the Tiger or was the charge not so much of a charge after all?
Call me a bitter malcontent, but this smells somewhat worse than the tigers breath.

*lol* I laughed when I read that. Rid, welcome to eastern european politics :) . I remember seeing Yuschenko going up a hill with a hose trying to put out a fire (while wearing his suit and tie) and the caption under it reads: President Yuschenko saves a company of firefighters putting out a fire.

And people complain about the BS on Capitol Hill :p .

Who here thinks this tiger stunt was staged? *puts up his hand*

I love how it says Putin is suddenly caring about the environment, all of a sudden too.

I thought this was a joke

For some reasons, Russians really like their leaders look virile. Putin was such a refreshing change after the lolling drunkard Yeltsin.

And, yet, the tiger survived the attack by this so-called “virile” former KGB agent.

Under a real leader, everybody would be eating tiger burgers!

AND he would have killed it with a rolled up newspaper!

Under a real leader, everybody would be eating tiger burgers! Not really. It was politically important for him to treat the tiger just as Russia plans to treat its former/future satellites. "Don't worry, we won't eat you. Just lie down while we get the collar on."

Aha, the metaphor, I hadn't thought of that.
Especially now that it has (not) been revealed that the Tiger's name is "Former Satellites of the Soviet Union".

dittohead not!

This is just more evidence that the Russians are moving toward Western style democracy. Why else would they find it necessary to stage a cheap political stunt like that?

I'm surprised Bush didn't think of it first.

Well, Cheney did shoot his hunting buddy in the face with a shotgun....I suppose that's sort of close

An old Texas lawyer does not compare with a Siberian Tiger even though they have a similar charging regime.
However for this administration it is probably close enough.

Nope. Tigers are an endangered species, where as lawyers are becomming a nucance in many areas.

Nope. Tigers are an endangered species, See, my metaphor works--so are central Asian democracies.

Shooting a lawyer, well, that's pretty close. He should have used a tranquilizer gun, so that the lawyer could be captured and studied. He could have been an endangered species, you know, lawyerus honestus.

Hehe "Get him! Don't let him escape! We need to track his grazing lands!"
