WINNIPEG — A five-year-old girl in a home with a potentially armed suspect helped police peacefully end a tense 10-hour standoff in a Winnipeg townhouse Saturday.

Tactical officers were called to the south-side home at dawn with reports of a domestic disturbance. Constable Jason Michalyshen said a woman left the home with minor injuries and a man barricaded himself inside with two young children.

Police said earlier in the day they believed the man may have been armed with a gun.

Negotiators were in contact with the suspect until mid-afternoon when it's believed he fell asleep. That's when police started talking to the five-year-old girl still inside the home.

Around 4 p.m. the young girl, clad in pink pyjamas, ran out the back patio door of the home into the arms of a police officer who carried her to a waiting police van. Shortly afterwards, police dressed in tactical gear – their guns drawn – entered the home where they found a 13-month-old boy and arrested the suspect.

Police cordoned off the townhouse complex for hours, setting up a command centre with police dogs, undercover officers and members of the tactical unit.
