VANCOUVER — The RCMP issued a public alert Monday after a missionary who works with university students was injured by a bomb that was disguised as a gift and left on his family's doorstep in Langley.
Gary Stevenson, 39, was injured in the head and chest by an explosion after he carried into his townhouse a package that local news media described as being in a pink gift bag.
Mr. Stevenson's wife, Lynda, and their two daughters, aged 3 and 1, were not hurt in the explosion, which occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, while the family was in the process of moving.
“At this point in the investigation, police have not yet determined whether this incident was targeted or random,” RCMP Constable Holly Marks said in a statement. “Therefore, police are encouraging the public to be vigilant and exercise caution with any suspicious packages.”

The attack is the latest incident involving bombs in the small, semi-rural township of about 200,000 people in the southeast quadrant of the Greater Vancouver metropolitan area.

Constable Marks said police don't see a link between the weekend bomb attack and the earlier incidents.
“You don't want to discount any possibility, but I really don't think that they are in any way connected. I think those were all pretty much kid-related. This one doesn't smack of a teenage prank,” she said.
