after you die, there is nothing. Absolutely nothing. No heaven, no hell, no pugatory, no limbo, just the Void.

Scary isn't it?

Not at all. How can something you aren't experiencing be frightening?

Spot on... sucession

heaven and hell are probably something that should be more frightening to us.

Duo we are all going to die one day, oblivion or not.

I've come to the personal belief long ago that we evolve when we die. I think we just drop our physical shell. I think there is another plane of existance we don't know about where we exist only as energy.

How's that for sci-fi?

Okay now you got be thinking all philosophically. I believe that early philosophies considered hell to be oblivion; that their existence would simply end. I believe that the concept of hell was a sort of, “If you think becoming dust is bad, you’ve go another thing coming Buster”. For some today oblivion holds a form of comfort in their confused difficult lives. I find this to be very sad.

By looking at the Law of Conservation of Energy, it is clear that every atom we are made of can be transformed into energy, or to matter, but not destroyed. Ergo, we are all immortal, even our toenails. (=])

Out like a light. Yeah, scares the **** out of me. Ah well.

Oblivion is illusion.

Lack of any direction is real, but temporary. It can terrify some.

actually... the thought of living on after I am able to take care of myself... is scarier... I would take oblivion over that.

I know some people who welcome oblivion. It means they can do whatever they choose to do without after worldly reprocussions.

oh well when you say that... I don't actually believe in oblivion... I believe we do evolve to another form of being... however if we don't... well there is nothing much we can do about that... so I take the karma route while on this plane of understanding in the event there is something to the karma route...I wish my bases to be covered... because I do really wish to transcend having to come back to this plane again...

I just thought of one idea. That when we die, we revert to the simple form of energy and rejoin a massive collection, adding our memories to the mass. Each new creature is a cup full of this energy ensuring that there is never the same "entity" again.

I'm not sure where that idea originates from, but I know it's at least touched on in the anime series Evangelion... being a gundam guy, I would have thought that you have seen it.

I disagree. All actions have consequences. Beyond that is the reason you live as you do. Are you saying that you are ethical and just only because you fear the punishment for being otherwise? I don't think you mean that.

You say you know people who welcome nothing after death, how do you know that their actions are the result of their belief of no life after death? Are you jealous? What difference does it make in your life what they believe about their afterlife?

I have no fear of oblivion, but an abiding curiousity about whether there is such a thing as a soul, reincarnation, etc. I've been singing this song for over 30 years-

"I'm not scared of dying...I don't really care...if there's peace to find in dying, let my dying time be near..." (Blood, Sweat and Tears)

If any of you have evidence of an afterlife, please share. I tend to the naturalistic, like some others here. What your body is composed of is not destroyed by death. To continue after death, have your body composted and added to the topsoil. Your molecules will then find their way into other lifeforms.

actually, i think that the idea of oblivion is rather more comforting than this idea of heaven/hell.

MikeD4o7: Sorry. Haven't seen that.

Slipped Mickey: The key with me is that I say alot of stuff that has points, but it doesn't mean I believe it. I can entertain many ideas but accept only a few.

Are you saying that you are ethical and just only because you fear the punishment for being otherwise?

Yes. I do. Many people abide to the laws because they are afraid of the punishment. Craig brought that up to with the idea of hell as a reinforcement to do good.

how do you know that their actions are the result of their belief of no life after death? Are you jealous? What difference does it make in your life what they believe about their afterlife?

I think many of their actions are because of their belief. I'm not jealous. Oblivion scares the **** out of me. It doesn't make any difference to me, remember, I don't believe everything I say, but I will say it if it has some substance.

Oblivion is a very scary concept. Although it is only scary in this world, as you won't be able to think about it when you are dead (obviously). But just try to imagine how your whole life and existence will be gone forever...
